Manila Observations

Filipinos eat with a fork and spoon, using a spoon turned to pull apart their food. They use lime, chilis, soy sauce, and vinegar to season foods; as well as salt and pepper.

Everyone is very courteous when they speak. Proper salutations, using ma'am and sir are always used, especially when speaking to Westerners.

It is generally very loud in Manila, with the traffic, honking, music playing, people talking, etc. Even in the office, people are rather loud in their cubicles, in the hall ways, and in the elevators.

Everytime I see a white man with a Filipino woman, I can't help but wonder if he bought her as his date or bride.

I can't buy shoes here, as they don't sell over a size 8 US.

The people here carry around towels, wash rags, or handkerchiefs to wipe their brows. Nice to see that they think that it is hot, too.

I am tall here; taller than most men and women. I feel gigantic!

Many words here are Spanish-influenced. Some that I noticed are pwede (puede), chaleco, pollo, maldito, pwerta (puerta).

Western music is common - Miley Cirus is currently #2 in the top 20. Also, Black Eyed Peas, Mariah Carey, and Taylor Swift are commonly heard.

Manila really reminds me of Lima, Peru, with the buildings, selling single cigarettes, the jeepneys (like the combis in Lima), and the complete disregard for traffic laws.

Malls are everywhere! It seems that Manila has taken to grouping everything in malls. Grocery stores are in malls, and it seems to be the main shopping. I have yet to see any free-standing stores. There are 6 malls all grouped by my hotel (Glorietta 1-5, and Greenbelt). It seems that shopping is a favorite activity here.

45 Minute Treadmill Workout

http://carrotsncake.com/2008/02/45-minute-treadmill-workout.html

This is an awesome treadmill workout that I tried today. It really switches things up, varies the intensity, and keeps you sweating.

I burned almost 400 calories according to the treadmill!

Everybody is doin' it:

1. When I get really thirsty I feel like I am suffocating.
2. I am really bad about taking pills and have a hard time remembering to take them on time or every day, for that matter.
3. Getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist, when they scape your teeth with the metal tools, makes my stomach flip. Yay for my Sonicare, as there is not much scraping going on the past several dentist visits!
4. I like cold weather over hot weather. Period. Sweating is gross and I do sweat.
5. I've never read a romance novel and cannot stand Jane Austen books.
6. I like to have everything clean and tidy. I cannot stand clutter on countertops. Everything has to be put back in its place.
7. I have a tube of C.O. Bigelow Metha Lip Tint with me at all times.
8. I love my bed and pillows.
9. I cannot stand when things don't work properly and are inefficient.
10. I want a dog, but I realize I can't have one at this point in my life.
11. If I have children, I will not send them to daycare.
12. I am very close to my family and talk to my bro, sister, mom or dad everyday.
13. When I work from home for too long I feel disconnected and alienated from people.
14. I love having my own bathroom in my apartment.
15. I hate leaving things for tomorrow that I can do today.
16. I love having my nails done, not another person actually doing them, but the way manicures make a person look put together. Same with eyebrows.
17. I graduated cum laude from undergrad. and think that I should have done better.
18. I tend not to trust vegatarians and hate when they are pushy about their food-beliefs.
19. I like dressing up for work as much as I like not dressing up for work when working from home - lots!
20. I like mob and shoot 'em-up movies, but hate guns.
21. I am excited to see how my life and my siblings lives ends up.
22. I do not like the words "frick" or "gal". A few other more lewd ones that I will not type, to boot.
23. I love Wheat Thins and have to restrain myself not to eat a whole box in 1 sitting. I think it is the crunch!
24. I don't regret anything that I have done thusfar in my life and believe that everything happens for a reason.
25. I have been told that I say "then" a lot when speaking or explaining things. I have been working on that.

Bless and protect him

First thing that I did when I woke up today was think to say a prayer for Barack Obama. May he be safe, protected, make good decisions, and continue to inspire.

I am so proud of him, our country, and the optimism he has able to make us feel as a nation. In watching the inauguration coverage, I am overcome with a sense of hope and pride. This is an amazing occasion and I am very glad it is happening during my lifetime. He is a role model for so many groups of people that identify with him.

I am not being naive; as I understand that Obama is not going to be able to fix everything, as he is not a cure-all or some divine savior. However, I am sure that he is going to be able to continue to inspire, make us reflect, think out a path and make decisions, and push for more good rather than bad.
